Reading Progress Celebrations

Each spring, BoulderReads! holds a wonderful event in the Canyon Gallery at which we honor our students and tutors for their tremendous work. The event, typically sponsored by the Boulder Public Library Foundation, is called the Reading Progress Celebration and its main feature is the sharing of student accomplishments. A microphone is passed around the room and each student who is willing to share stands up (accompanied by his or her tutor) and spends about 60 seconds telling the audience about some of their major accomplishments since enrolling in BoulderReads!

Some students report that they have improved their employment by getting a job, a better job, a raise or a promotion. Some talk about passing the GED or enrolling in community college. Other students talk about passing the citizenship test or driver's license test. Others speak of reading to their children and helping their children with homework. Most speak of reaching a point where reading is fun.

The listening audience, which consists of other students and their tutors as well as BoulderReads! staff, Boulder Library Commissioners, Boulder Public Library Foundation members and other key supporters, consistently leaves the event with a sense of inspiration at the awesome work being done.
