Book Discussion Groups
Participating in a book discussion group is a great opportunity for an adult new reader; first, they know they "have arrived" into the world of readers, since book discussion is a reader thing to do. It also helps them develop their critical thinking skills (they progress from a literal recounting of the plot to more complex analysis and discussions of different views of the story). The students get to interact with, learn from and support each other in a way they can't with the one-on-one tutoring.
The BoulderReads! staff takes suggestions from tutors and students, chooses a book that we think will appeal to and be readable by as many students as possible, orders multiple copies, and then gives the tutor/student pairs two to three months to read them before the discussion is held.
